Gallery 6 – Bristol Humour This gallery focuses on amusing scenes spotted around Bristol. You can explore other galleries using the drop down menu under the Bristol Gallery tab. You wait ages for a bus and then along comes … A hot air balloon flies low over Redland, Bristol just prior to landing on the morning of Sunday 18 September. Prevailing winds make balloons a common feature of the Redland skyline and they can get quite low when the thermals are not in their favour. An old Avery Hardoll Model S fuel pump, dating back to the 1950s, provides an intriguing counterpoint to this more recent MOT advert (the MOT was not introduced until 1960). Good to see this piece of history still standing in a road alongside Victoria Park, Bedminster A stylish Bristol driver contemplates a snack before heading off. A pigeon and CCTV camera on watch in the Bathurst Basin, Bristol. An apparently abandoned boat in need of a clean at the water’s edge in Seamills, Bristol. An iron fence, bollards and padlocks near B Bond Warehouse adjacent to Cumberland Basin, Bristol seem determined to deter entry. A dead end sign next to one of Bristol’s few remaining red telephone boxes seems suggestive of the future of these once familiar British icons. This one is to be found on Back of Kingsdown Parade (BS6). A discarded and decaying mermaid sculpture captured leaning against a couple of shipping containers in the Cumberland Basin, in August 2017. Her facial expression seems to sum up that feeling of enjoying the heat when the sun finally shines. It’s amazing what you find when wandering around Bristol. You can be in no doubt of your location when you stand at this spot in Cliftonwood, Bristol. This attractive part of town offers some great views over the Floating Harbour. The humorous ‘You Are Here’ sign reflects the slightly quirky nature of the place which sports balloon mosaics, junction boxes ‘converted’ into office blocks and a bike serving as a garden planter. The Royal West of England Academy in Bristol hosts many art exhibitions. This opportunistic image perhaps lends a transient touch of artistic humour to the entrance hall.
